He brought me to his banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. (Song of Songs 2:4)
The face of love, and a warriors strength shines forth to those who hear his call; the call of the Lord. He is fierce against the enemy who seeks after his bride to be. His bride is a city, a chosen people clothed in righteous acts. His table is a marriage supper, a covenant. He has sent out his Spirit to call in those who will hear. He will cause them to overcome the world of blasphemy against God, overcome the murderers, and their abominations.
He calls her to his banqueting table, a house of his Spirit more fruitful, more fulfilling than wine. He sends his Spirit to the lovesick and abandoned. His banner over her is cover and love toward her, and an ensign against all enemies. The Lord is the beloved whose bride declares, ” He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.” The banqueting house is a house of wine. Wine describes the presence of the Holy Spirit.
The banner of love points to Christ’s love displayed on the cross in crucifixion. After death he was raised up, resurrected. The covenant meal is him crucified shedding his blood and his body broken bearing our death. His resurrection is our new life where his Spirit will raise us up. His table is bread and wine. He is victor over death.
The banner of war against the enemy was Christ on the cross. Jesus was raised up on a pole, a sign to all upon which was written, “This is King of the Jews”. He crushed the head of the enemy. His heal was bruised as foretold in the Garden of Eden. Isaiah 50:7 (ESV) reveals what would happen. “But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.” Further, he reveals a call of God the Father of our Lord Jesus in Isaiah 50:10 “Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God.”
